Fag

Skolen startet offisielt paa mandag, og det tok til i dag (torsdag) for aa ha hatt alle fagene. Jeg har 3 fag dette semesteret.

Collection management er, i bunn og grunn, om hvordan man haandterer en samling i forhold til innkjoep, kassering, og lignende. Foerste time fikk jeg et dokument om hvilken politikk Wales nasjonalmuseum har for haandtering av menneskelige rester. Det var baade fascinerende og litt forstyrrende, paa samme tid.

Managing in the Information Environment minner om en blanding av Organisasjon og Oekonomi som jeg hadde paa 3. semester paa DB, og Business Intelligence. Det kan bli spennende, tror jeg, og uansett kan det vaere ok aa faa det oppfrisket.

Organising Knowledge er noenlunde det samme som Vidensorganisation. De foerste timene med det ble litt vel grunnleggende i forhold til at det er et Master kurs, men det er vel nesten aa forvente naar majoriteten av studentene ikke har bachelor i biblioteksvitenskap, som i Danmark.

I forhold til sammenligning med DB, er det mye mer praktisk anlagt her - mindre teori, og mer praktisk, og det virker i stoerre grad som man forbereder studentene paa et yrkesfaglig liv, i motsetning til et liv som forskere.

(Sitter paa datamaskin i kjelleren paa skolebiblioteket - som har aapent til midnatt frem til 5 oktober, etter det er det aapent 24/7,... for aa forklare de merkelige ekstra a'er og e' i stavingen.)

School officially started with classes this Monday, but it wasn't until today (Thursday) that I've had all my courses. I have three courses this semester.

Collection management is, essentially, about handling a collection of something. In class on Tuesday I looked through a document on Wales Museum and their policy of collection management. Needless to say, I was enthralled (and a bit petrified) by the fact that they had an official policy on how to handle human remains.

Managing in the Information environment (if that is the actual title) is sort of like a course I did on third semester in Denmark, and the Business Intelligence course I did on fifth semester. It looks interesting, though, and like it will be a good refresher of my memory.

Organising Knowledge, well, it is rather a lot like the Vidensorganisation course as well as last semester's Knowledge Organization, so the first lectures ended up being a bit basic for my taste. However, getting a different approach to the subject than at DB, is, after all, partially why I am here, so it will be interesting to see as time goes on.

Comparing with DB, it seems much more practical here - whereas DB can get fairly theoretical about certain aspects. And, to a degree, where I've always had the feeling that DB is preparing us for a life of research, I do get the feeling that they're prepping us for actual work in the field here.

(Am on strange UK keyboard in the library. The internet at the dorms has stopped working / again/ so apologies for the strange signs... or the lack of strange signs for non-Scandinavians... :) I'm still finding it very cool that they're open until midnight, unlike certain other uni libraries, and that from the 5th of October, they'll be open 24/7)

You know, because I have my mind in the gutter I read the title of this entry in a whole other way :o) But nevermind. Interesting to know the differences in teaching :o)
